In this lecture, Post-War and Contemporary Art specialist Katherine Arnold speaks with Christie’s Global President Jussi Pylkkänen about the power of painting in 20th century art. Among the artists discussed is Francis Bacon, whose postwar pieces were steeped in existentialism and in philosophy; Jean-Michel Basquiat, who brought the intensity of 1980s New York to his work; and figurative painter Peter Doig. Arnold speaks to their varied practices, studios and oil painting techniques.
Also discussed is the changing climate of collecting in Asia. ‘I think that the market will continue to grow here,’ Pylkkänen says. ‘Asia is the biggest market in the world in terms of growth potential.’
