Invitation to Consign: African and Oceanic Art

Our  December sale of Art Africain et Océanien was a tremendous success achieving the best result for the department since it was established as part of Christie’s Paris. With a packed sale room and numerous telephone bidders our results demonstrated the global participation and enthusiasm attracted by these great works of art. This auction was led by the Nkundu reliquary of the Mestach collection, fought over by three bidders before reaching the final price of €2,697,000, a world record for a work of African art at auction in 2012.

A record for a Tabwa object at auction was also established with an exceptional male figure formerly from the John Hewett collection which sold for €481,000.

Spectacular prices were achieved by the Fang head from the former Ratton, Fénéon and Berès collections, with an impeccable provenance (€385,000), the Baga Snake, a recently discovered masterpiece (€313,000), and the powerful nail figure (€301,000).

 A collection-driven sale, these works of art were fresh to the market and highly coveted by collectors as demonstrated by the strong results.
