Invitation to Consign: Antiquities

2012 was an exceptional year for the Christie’s Antiquities team, with sales in New York totaling well over $20 million. These outstanding results proved, yet again, that Christie’s is the world’s leading auction house for Antiquities.  We are now looking forward to assembling our June 2013 auction of ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern works of art.

Over the past year, Antiquities sales in New York have attained outstanding results, especially for property from private collections. Most recently, in December, we achieved 195% of the presale estimate for several lots from a Distinguished Private Collection, which included an incredible Roman marble portrait bust of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, circa 170-180 A.D., that realized $2,042,500; as well as Property from the Zuckerman Collection which brought more than 10 times the estimate for an Iranian terracotta female figure, selling for $230,500.  This demonstrates our ability to build sales of the utmost quality, attract an international audience of bidders and realize the highest price possible. Other highlights from include a Roman Marble Actor, circa late 1st-early 2nd century A.D., that achieved $926,500, and an Egyptian Painted Votive Linen, New Kingdom, Late Dynasty XVIII-Early Dynasty XIX, circa 1300-1200 B.C., that sold for $782,500.
