Lot Essay

Discussing Pauline's Grotto, a watercolour of 1943, the artist recalled 'the chance discovery of a beautiful two hundred year-old grotto at Pains Hills, only twenty miles from London, made me grotto-minded for a time. I painted it within and without and then enjoyed myself inventing pictorial grottoes of my own'. (See W. Russell Flint, Royal Academy of Arts Diploma Exhibition Catalogue, London, 1962, p. 8').
