Lot Notes

Ralph Jentsch has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

In the early 1920s, Grosz's mordant drawings and his contribution to Dadaist happenings and journals had made him a popular figure. His marriage to Eva Peter in 1920 and the relative stabilizing of the economy in 1923 made an impact on Grosz and from this time on the tenor of his satire becomes less incisive as his line grew softer and his colors brighter. After a trip to the Soviet Union in 1922 his themes became less specifically critical and he began to render the life about him with greater realism.
