Lot Description

WAUGH, Evelyn. Mr. Loveday's Little Outing and Other Stories. Leipzig et al: The Albatross, 1937. 8° (185 x 110mm). (Occasional light scattered spotting.) Original red half leather, top edge gilt (endpapers lightly spotted). Provenance: Evelyn Waugh (presentation inscription to:) -- Lady Sibell Rowley.

ONE OF 12 COPIES, THIS ONE PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR, AND INSCRIBED BY WAUGH TO SIBELL ROWLEY: 'For darling Lady Sibell with all my love Bo. Feb. 11th 1939'. Rowley's father, William Lygon the seventh Earl Beauchamp, was a model for Lord Marchmain, and the family home Madresfield, a model for Brideshead in Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. Waugh, who frequently stayed at Madresfield to write, absorbed much of the detail of the Lygons lifestyle and decanted it into his work.
