[FREUD, Sigmund (1856-1939)]. Two canes reputedly owned by Freud: the first an ebony walking stick, the Austrian silver handle decorated with scrolling foliate tendrils (lacking metal ferrule), early twentieth century; the second a fruitwood cane, the rootwood knopped terminal with shaped silver mounts, the stem with a silver buckle clasp engraved with interlaced initials SF (lacking ferrule), the silver buckle indistinctly marked TD [perhaps Thomas Davies Junior], Birmingham, 1893. Provenance: Sigmund Freud (by repute; the 'SF' monogram corresponds with artefacts at the Freud Museum in London); Freud's niece (the daughter of his half-brother Philipp), Pauline Hartwig (1873-1951) -- described during her lifetime as having belonged to her uncle; acquired at posthumous sale of her widower, Frederick (d.18 January 1958), at The Bend, Thorley Lane, Timperley, Cheshire, in 1960; by descent to present owners.
