Lot Essay

The position with the right hand lowered in the gesture of compassion and holding the hem of his robe in the left is popular in the Swat and Kashmiri context; compare with a figure of Buddha from the Nasli and Alice Heeramaneck Collection, P. Pal, Bronzes of Kashmir, 1975, cat. no. 20; compare further with a figure of Buddha seated on a throne supported by lions and with similar treatment of the double-lotus base, at the British Museum, dated ninth century, Swat Valley, in Pal, op. cit., cat. no. 73. For the peacock base, see the larger figure of Lokeshvara at the Metropolitan Museum, in Pal, op. cit., cat. no. 79.
