Ben Williams was a strong and gifted full-back. He was born in Penhriwceiber, South Wales, and as a schoolboy he was a talented boxer and considered a future in the fight game. However, Swansea Town managed to lure him away from boxing and he signed for them in 1923. He played 97 games for the Swans before Everton brought him to Goodison Park in December 1929. He was an instant hit with the Everton fans and he and Warney Cresswell formed a great defensive partnership. In season 1930-31 he captained the club to the Division 2 Championship. During this time he also gained International recognition, making a total of ten appearances for his Country. Due to serious injury he missed out on the 1933 F.A.Cup Final and never fully recovered from a cartilage operation. He was transferred to Newport County in 1936.
