12o. Color frontispiece (eighteenth-century street scene with couple in period costume based on Hogarth) and 26 color illustrations. Original floral cloth, upper cover with two gilt-lettered white cloth labels, color decorated endpapers (Linder 1 [used four times]); quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: Gilbert F. Thompson (signature on half-title dated 1904).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (October, 1903), with same endpapers repeated four times IN THE VERY SCARCE DE-LUXE FLORAL CLOTH BINDING. The covers are bound in a floral fabric from Beatrix Potter's grandfather's factory. Linder, p. 423; V & A 1570. Not in Quinby. VERY FINE.
