4o (275 x 220 mm). 4 folding tables printed on blue paper, 60 folding engraved plates (several printed on blue paper) (plate 17 detached, some occasional pale spotting and offsetting, a few minor tears along folds). Original wrappers, uncut (some chipping along edges).
FIRST EDITION of Monge's description of the principles and practice of building artillery. Monge, the inventor of descriptive geometry whose work greatly influenced 19th-century investigations in the field, was a supporter of the French Revolution and assumed various administrative and political responsibilities during Napoleon's reign. He played an important role in the development and manufacture of arms and munitions by establishing gun foundries in churches and on farms throughout the French countryside and by teaching workers the techniques and skills needed to implement his new methods of production.
