Damien Hirst
An interesting hand-written letter from Damien Hirst to a friend, [n.d. but circa 1985], the letter refers to a painting he had just sent to his friend ...the painting I sent you was a joke. I painted red noses on the three men and made them clowns and laughed because I'd never painted such a light painting, almost something from a children's book.. and then talks of his current work ...it's assemblages in the manner of Kurt Schwitters...Holden and I came across an absolute mine of collage material in the house next door, two rooms packed almost to the ceiling with objects of powerful personality collected over a lifetime...it's sacrilege using the things to make collages but they possessed me...I don't know how the walls can contain such a wealth of I don't know what, it's like a rock pool and it really exhausts me to go up there. We searched through a six or seven foot high pile of fabulous rubbish and found a desk with pens and pipe racks laid on the top as though slowly over the years it had just been covered over with junk...It's much more real than the physical side of it. Anyway, it's sent me a bit loopy... Hirst ends the letter on a positive note looking forward to the coming year ...you'll have to come round in 1986, the year of fun and progression, my year...Meanwhile, get everybody out of their heads and into creation of all kinds, poetry, theatre, painting playwriting, performance, use everything around you without exception and with a fury... signed Damien, 5pp.; accompanied by a sketch on a piece of lined paper, the sketch in pencil depicting a ram's head on a chair -- 7¾x5in. (19.7x12.7cm.) (2)
