Philaretos Brachamios, of Armenian origin, was one of the generals supporting Romanus IV Diogenes in his campaigns against the Turks. He joined the opposition against Michael VII (1071-1078), and submitted to his successor Nicephorus Botaneiates (1078-1081), who bestowed upon him several high dignities, including that of curopalates. As stratopedarch of Anatolia, Philaretos had command of the Empire's troops opposing the Turks in central Asia Minor.
