Papers of the Honourable Robert Graham as Governor's Agent in British Kaffraria, 1864-69, including long series of 80 autograph letters signed by Sir Philip Wodehouse as Governor of the Cape of Good Hope and High Commissioner of South Africa, January 1865-July 1868, to Graham, relating to the governing of the British Crown Colony of Kaffraria, approx 200 pages (two incomplete), folio, 4to and 8vo, also a memorandum on appointments; long autograph letter signed by John Maclean (assistant commissioner), giving his views on Xhosa grievances, 1854, 8 pages; miscellaneous letters and documents relating to Graham's service in British Kaffraria and elsewhere in South Africa (24 in total);
also five manuscript maps: Plan of British Kaffraria and adjacent divisions of the Cape of Good Hope, showing military positions, pen and wash on waxed paper, 52 x 62.1cm. mid 19th Century; Plan of British Kaffraria, Transkei and adjacent territories showing police stations by Wm Percival Dale, 1865, ownership inscription of Robert Graham, pen and coloured inks on waxed paper, 61 x 97.5cm.; Plan of twenty farms in the Field country of Buck Kraal, Victoria, for sale by auction, by C.I. Gray, government surveyor, pen, ink and wash, 68.3 x 80.5cm. (repairs); Map of Travinskeian Provinces with statistical information, executed and signed by C.G. GORDON [as Major General in command of colonial forces in South Africa], 1882, pen and wash, 32.6 x 40cm. Provenance. Robert Graham; and by descent
Robert Graham (d.1887) was the son of Colonel John Graham (see preceding lot). He settled in South Africa in 1850 and raised and commanded Graham's Horse in the war of 1851-52. He served as Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate in Grahamstown, 1853-64, in British Kaffraria and later as HM Collector of Customs at the port of Table Bay with a seat in the Executive Council.
