The Reverend Frank Oswald Thorne, C.B.E., M.C., was born in May 1892 and educated at St. Paul's and Christ Church, Oxford. Wounded during the course of the Great War, he served as Captain and Adjutant of the 13th Battalion, Manchester Regiment from 1915-17 and a Brigade Major in No. 1 Section Tyne Garrison from 1917-19. Ordained in 1922, he joined the Universities Mission to Central Africa, ultimately rising to the appointment of Bishop of Nyasaland, which office he occupied from 1936-61, in addition to acting as Dean of Province in Central Africa from 1955.
