Lot Essay

Gluck began to concentrate on flower paintings in 1932, the year that she met Constance Spry, the society florist who worked for the Royal Family. Constance Spry realised that Gluck's paintings would fit into the fashionable interiors of the homes of her clients, many of whom had became personal friends, and she effected a number of introductions which led to lucrative commissions for Gluck. Hilda Cowan, the present owner's grandmother, was a great friend of Constance Spry and no doubt met Gluck through this connection (see D. Souhami, Gluck her biography, London, 1988, pp. 87-92).
