Lot Essay

Little is known about the life of the artist. His oeuvre consists of a small number of signed still lifes, in which fish often feature prominently, that reveal a debt both to the Parisian realité still life painters and to their northern antecedents such as Jan Fyt and Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Of all his known pictures, this delicate panel probably relates most closely with works by the former confraternity of painters.
