BY 1928 JEAN LAUER HAD BECOME DISILLUSIONED WITH COMMERCIAL TEXTILE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. HE CLOSED HIS OWN TEXTILE FACTORY IN LYON WHEN HE TOOK OVER THE DIRECTION OF THE INDEPENDENT WEAVERS IN COGOLIN WHO STILL WORKED IN A TRADITIONAL MANNER. BY DOING SO, LAUER WAS AT LAST ABLE TO REALISE HIS IDEAL OF PRODUCTION AS BOTH CRAFT AND ART FORM. LAUER'S WEAVERS PRODUCED CARPETS TO DESIGNS BY THE MOST IMPORTANT DESIGNERS OF THE DAY, INCLUDING EILEEN GRAY, JACQUES-EMILE RUHLMANN, IVAN DA SILVA BRUHNS AND LOUIS SüE. HENRI GONSE WAS A FRIEND OF JEAN LAUER AND CREATED A NUMBER OF DESIGNS FOR COGOLIN. GONSE'S PASSION FOR CLASSICAL GARDEN DESIGN, NOTABLY THE JARDINS à LA FRANçAISE, IS REFLECTED IN THE PRESENT LOT, AS IN SO MANY OTHER OF HIS DESIGNS.
