Lot Essay

The Logistecologia of Samuel Jeake (1623-90) was edited by his son, Samuel Jeake the younger (1652-99) who attained notoriety by an attempt to construct a flying machine. 'To see the size and weight of this book, one would have thought arithmetic had been a branch of controversial divinity. But it is now very valuable, from the variety of information which it contains, particularly on weights, measures, and coins; and from the goodness of the index' (Peacock, quoted by De Morgan).
