Lot Essay

Delapierre moved from France to Moscow in 1767 and established himself the following year in St Petersburg, where by 1770 he had become a member of the Académie Impériale des Beaux-Arts. He was appointed official Court Painter where his commissions included the portraits of Tsar Paul I and Tsarina Catherine II.
