Lot Essay

A fully-qualified General Practioner, Ahmed Mater Al-Ziad Aseeri uses elements from the world around him and from his own medical experience. In this series he uses X-Rays which he has sourced from the hospital. These are combined with local elements, including talismanic symbols or illuminations in gold and natural pigments which resemble the traditionally highly-decorated opening pages of religious texts.
A recent solo exhibition (November 2008) was opened by His Majesty King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia who has pledged his support for new and innovative art and who has recognized Asseri as the first Saudi artist to be exhibited at the British Museum as part of its Word in Art exhibition, which featured one of his X-Ray paintings.
