Lot Description

SHAW, George (1751-1813) and Frederick Polydore NODDER (fl. 1773-c.1801). The Naturalist's Miscellany: or, coloured figures of natural objects; drawn and described immediately from nature. London: Nodder and Co., [1789]-1790-1813.

24 volumes, 8° (226 x 138mm). Engraved dedication leaf, 1064 hand-coloured engraved plates, complete with the engraved plate depicting Shaw's tomb at the beginning of volume 19. Volume 24 with general indexes. (Very light, occasional offsetting, a number of plates misbound, particularly in volume 22, 3 plates slightly trimmed, not affecting images.) Contemporary speckled calf, gilt spines with black and green morocco labels (very light rubbing to extremities).

A FINE COPY OF THIS 'REMARKABLE SERIAL' (Wood), a monumental work on natural history. The Naturalist's Miscellany is devoted to zoological subjects, and includes a high proportion of birds; each subject is described in both Latin and English, and illustrated by a plate, the majority by Frederick Nodder's son Richard. Complete sets are rare, since the work was published in 287 monthly parts over some 24 years. Fine Bird Books p.142; Lisney pp.312-335; Nissen IVB 869; Wood p. 565. (24)
