ENTOMOLOGY -- NEWMAN, Edward (editor). The Entomologist. London: Van Voorst, 1840-1842, 1864-1953. Volumes 1-86 No.6 bound in 86 volumes, 8° (213 x 135mm). Numerous plates. A near uniform set in contemporary red half calf or red cloth, green morocco spine labels (a few spines and labels faded, extremities very lightly rubbed).
EXTREMELY RARE AND EXTENSIVE RUN OF THIS ILLUSTRIOUS JOURNAL. The gap of 22 years between the completion of vol. I and vol. II is explained by Newman in the preface to vol. II, whereby the Zoologist and then Stainton's Entomologist's Weekly Intelligencer had filled the gap before the latter folded. Newman resurrected his publication, noting: 'Whoever wants Volume I will, I fear, want in vain; it reposes in peace on the shelves of the British Museum, the Universities and the learned societies, but has long disappeared from the bookseller's counter' (II, vi).
