Selon Steven Hooper (Pacific Encounters, Art & Divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860, Londres, 2006) ce type de pagaie, objet de convoitise depuis la première moitié du XIXème siècle, aurait été sculpté sur l'île de Ra'ivavae vers 1820-1840.
