Lot Essay

Louis Péridiez, maître in 1764.

This refined commode, described in the Royal Inventory as one of Trois commodes de bois violet et rose à placages et dessus de marbre brèche d'alep... was part of a larger delivery made by Gilles Joubert in June, 1763. In addition to this commode, the inventory also lists two tables de nuit, No 2235, and two encoignures, No 2236 (Archives Nationales, 01 3317, fol.197). This furniture was commissioned for the apartment of the three Royal princes, the duc de Berry (later Louis XV), the comte de Provence (later Louis XVIII) and the comte d'Artois (later Charles X). Although Peridiez is not recorded as receiving his maîtrise until the following year, this discrepancy is likely a result of the vagaries of 18th century record-keeping.
