LES HAUTEURS DE SèVRES - LE CHEMIN TROYON DEPICTS A COUNTRY ROAD IN VILLE D'AVRAY, A SUBJECT WHICH COROT WAS TO PAINT AGAIN LATER IN HIS CAREER (SEE ROBAUT NO. 1485). THE PRESENT WORK WAS COMMISSIONED DIRECTLY FROM COROT BY A FRIEND, M. PRESCHEZ, WHO WAS A SOLICITOR FROM COULOMIERS. PRESCHEZ WAS AN ESTABLISHED PATRON OF THE ARTIST AND IN 1871 COROT OFFERED HIM ANOTHER PICTURE, LE PêCHEUR PRèS DE LA RIVE, TIRANT SON éPERVIER, WHICH THE PAINTER SENT TO PRESCHEZ 'AVEC SA PHOTOGRAPHIE DéDICACéE' (OP. CIT., 1956).

THIS LANDSCAPE, PAINTED BETWEEN 1835 AND 1840, REFLECTS COROT'S SOPHISTICATED HANDLING OF LIGHT AND COLOUR LEARNT DURING TWO RECENT TRIPS TO ITALY IN 1828 AND 1834. IN THE SEASON BETWEEN HIS TWO ITALIAN STAYS, AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SECOND, COROT TRAVELLED ALL OVER FRANCE, SEARCHING FOR ROMANTIC LANDSCAPES TO PAINT. 'LORSQU'IL LES TROUVAIT, COMME EN NORMANDIE, EN FORêT DE FONTAINEBLEU, ET BIENTôT DANS LE MORVAN OU DANS LE DAUPHINé, IL N'HéSITAIT PAS à Y TRAVAILLER FRéQUEMMENT DE MANIèRE QUASI OBSESSIONNELLE. APRèS LE TEMPS FORT DU SéJOUR ITALIEN, IL PARAîT éVIDENT QUE COROT RECHERCHAIT SURTOUT LA VARIéTé DE SITES TRèS DIFFéRENTS D'UNE RéGION à L'AUTRE: SEREINS ET VAPOREUX à VILLE D'AVRAY, SAUVAGES ET RUGUEUX EN FORêT DE FONTAINEBLEAU, LUXURIANTS ET TOUFFUS DANS LE MORVAN, TRANSPARENTS ET LUMINEUX EN NORMANDIE. LES VUES QU'IL PEIGNIT D'APRèS NATURE, ENTIèREMENT OU PARTIELLEMENT, à SON RETOUR D'ITALIE, COMPTENT PARMI LES PLUS BELLES ET LES PLUS ACHEVéES DE SA PRODUCTION. IL SERAIT BIEN DIFFICILE DE PARLER DE NAïVETé EN LES ANALYSANT, COMME LE FIRENT CERTAINS AUTEURS, TELLEMENT LE SENS DE LA PERSPECTIVE, DE LA LUMIèRE ET DE LA CONSTRUCTION EST ALORS MûRI ET MATRîSé' (V. POMARèDE, EXH. CAT., COROT, PARIS, GRAND PALAIS, FEB.-MAY 1996, P. 62). LES HAUTEURS DE SèVRES DEPICTS ONE OF THESE '[SITES] SEREINS ET VAPOREUX' (IBIDEM) OF VILLE-D'AVRAY, ONE OF COROT'S FAVOURITE SPOTS IN FRANCE. IN THE CHOICE OF THE PERSPECTIVE, AS WELL AS IN THE SPATIAL ORGANISATION OF THE PICTORIAL SURFACE, COROT IS INDEBTED TO THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DUTCH AND FLEMISH LANDSCAPISTS: IT IS INDEED THROUGH THE LUCID RESEARCH ON THE REALISM OF BAROQUE NORTHERN MASTERS - AS WELL AS THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE PRODUCTION OF HIS ENGLISH CONTEMPORARIES - THAT COROT FURTHER ENLARGED HIS ARTISTIC VISION, BETWEEN THE 1830S AND THE 1840S, AND DEVELOPED HIS OWN CONCEPTION OF PLEIN AIR PAINTING.
