MERCURY COUGAR S CONCEPT
1999

Silver with grey leather interior

The 1999 Mercury Cougar S is an impressive and aggressive package that would have made the Cougar S one of the hottest pieces of equipment in the rapidly expanding sport coupe market had it made it into production. The Cougar S concept's exterior presentation is a no-holds-barred performance package highlighted by the large rectangular air intake in the deep front air dam with fog lamps cleverly integrated into scoop-shaped recesses. Distinctively flared fenders cover large 18" specially built 2-piece 6-spoke alloy wheels wearing 235/45ZR-18 Michelin Pilot SX tires.
Inside the wheels impressively large Brembo brakes from the SVT Contour demonstrate how seriously Mercury was taking its performance. With 13.1" front discs and 11" rears Cougar S has stopping power to match its purposeful appearance.
A functional hood scoop feeds cold air to the V-6 engine and a very Euro-style radio antenna on the windshield header gives a cosmopolitan touch that suits the image of the Cougar S concept. Extended rocker panels improve airflow management. At the rear a new fascia with integrated exhaust pipes flanked by rectangular air vents continues the front air dam's theme. The Cougar S concept has two spoilers, one on the conventional decklid location and another that is integrated with the rear window header.
The Cougar S concept's interior features leather covered adjustable Recaro seats, a special steering wheel, alloy-covered pedals and unique instrument panel graphics.
Mercury's press information on the 1999 Mercury Cougar S concept describes it as having a 3-liter V-6 engine making 210hp (compared with the standard Cougar 2.5-liter V-6 with 170hp) and all wheel drive, extensive functional changes that would transform the Cougar S. While it isn't known at the time of cataloging if the engine has been enlarged to 3-liters, it can be confirmed that any reference to "all wheel drive" is a figment of the press release writer's imagination.
However, even if the standard 170hp V-6 (or, better yet, the tweaked 200hp Contour SVT V-6) is joined to the Cougar S concept's 5-speed manual gearbox, its brakes and tire package more than support the performance image so apparent in its visual presentation. Even 3½ years after its introduction the Cougar S concept remains a timely expression of the trend toward hot sports coupes.
The Cougar S concept is in essentially showroom condition, with excellent exterior paint and an unblemished interior. The special front and rear fascias - and presumably the rocker panel extensions - are fiberglass.
