The most intense design work for a Star Trek series generally occurred during the preproduction phase before the pilot episode. That's when the main sets, ships, and other key elements were created. This remarkable collection documents the process by which production designer Richard James sought to give his ship a fresh, new look, while remaining faithful to the established style of Starfleet vessels.
