Designed by Walter M. Jefferies in 1964, the original bridge combined functional ergonomics with good looks and futuristic styling. The bridge consists of several workstations, each with critical status screens at eye level and desktop controls laid out in arc shape for easy reach. The captain sits at the center of the room where he (or she) can survey and talk directly with each key technician. Display screens on the upper walls and a large forward viewscreen provide situational awareness. The U.S. Navy and the Air Force have each studied the Enterprise bridge for classified projects, and the Defense Advanced Projects Research Administration actually built an experimental control center based closely on the Star Trek set. Even NASA studied Matt Jefferies' work when designing its new Mission Control rooms. The Enterprise bridge is not only an icon of popular culture, but it helped to define the concept of the modern control room.
