We are grateful to Charles Nugent of the Whitworth Art Gallery for suggesting that the present watercolour depicts Caerphilly Castle, Wales, although the artist has somewhat exaggerated the ruinous state of the castle.

Lot Essay

Rooker executed a series of views of Pevensey. Two views of Pevensey Castle were included in the Rooker Sale in 1801, lot 63. A view of the ruins of the South Tower is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and two related views, The Gate Tower of Pevensey Castle from the Moat and The Gate Tower of Pevensey Castle from the Courtyard, were sold in these Rooms, 6 June 1972, lots 58-59. Rooker exhibited a watercolour entitled Part of Pevensey Castle at the Royal Academy in 1792, no. 47.
