Lot Essay

The Klingon Battle Cruiser was designed by Walter M. Jefferies and made its debut during the third season of The Original Series, a worthy adversary for Kirk and company. Based closely on Jefferies' design, this model was made by Magicam and filmed by John Dykstra's Apogee effects facility for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Because the model was seen so closely on the big screen, it had to be far more finely detailed than was the original version from the first TV series. Later, the movie model was further detailed with delicate photo-etched brass overlays by the Industrial Light and Magic model shop for its featured role in Star Trek VI. This model is most famous for the dramatic opening shot of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in which the ship was seen in stunning detail as it flew past the camera at extremely close range.
