Lot Notes

Throughout the course of his long and successful career, Wilfrid de Glehn was an inveterate traveler. After his marriage to the American-born painter Jane Emmett in 1904, he and his wife made annual painting trips to Europe, spending summers and autumns in picturesque locales such as the Swiss Alps and Venice, Italy. On numerous occasions, the couple were accompanied by the de Glehns' good friend and painting companion, John Singer Sargent, and an entourage that often included Sargent's sister, Emily. The influence of Sargent on de Glehn is clearly evident in the present work, Under the Willows.
