The sale of The Van Cliburn Collection  achieved $4,381,550 and was 89% sold by lot and 92% by value. The top lot of the sale was a pair of George II Giltwood Mirrors, attributed to Matthias Lock, circa 1750, realizing $464,500/£292,635/€366,955.

Will Strafford, Head of Private Collections said,: “Van Cliburn’s legendary appeal as a performer and a collector was celebrated in Christie’s saleroom as buyers from all over the world responded with tremendous enthusiasm to the superb Russian works of art, English furniture, English silver and jewelry in his collection.”  Andrew McVinish, Specialist, Collections Department added: “The sale was 92% sold with many pieces far exceeding their estimates including his exceptional pair of George II giltwood mirrors attributed to Matthias Lock, which after a prolonged bidding duel realized $464,500.”  Izabela Grocholski, Head of Russian Art and Mark Moehrke, Director Russian Works of Art, commented: “Van Cliburn had a life-long love of Russian culture,  and the Russian works of art in his collection, often acquired on his concert tours, were exceptional both for their rarity and for their historical importance, and were enthusiastically pursued by both Russian and American clients.” Capera Ryan, Managing Director of the Southwest region, said: “Van Cliburn is a much-loved Texan, and the sale was enthusiastically supported by buyers from Texas both on the telephone and in the saleroom- three out of the top ten lots will return home to Texas.”
