RESULTS: Old Master Evening Sale

Saleroom shot of Jacob Jordaens's The Holy Family with an angel. Oil on canvas. Price Realised: £1,805,000

Henry Pettifer, International Director, Head of Old Masters & British Paintings Christie’s London: “The Old Masters Evening Sale concludes a fantastic year for the department and brings the running total for global Old Master auctions at Christie’s to £152 million. The auction saw strong sell-through rates of 81% by lot and value, with bidders from 28 countries across four continents and realised £12.2 million. Together with the Spanish Old Masters from the Ancient to Modern Collection (£2.6 million) and the Old Masters Day Sale (£2.4 million), Old Masters sales realised a total of £17.2 million for the week. The top lot was The Holy Family with an Angel by Jacob Jordaens, which sold for £1.8 million, and artist records were achieved for each of the three important French Renaissance portraits François Clouet, Corneille de Lyon and Jean Decourt.  Record prices were also fetched for Battista Zelotti’s Entombment and a rare Self-Portrait by the female painter Judith Leyster. This year was led by the record-breaking sale of Rubens’s masterpiece Lot and his Daughters, which sold in July for £44.9 million, the highest auction price for any work of art sold in Europe in 2016. The private treaty sales of two Rembrandt Portraits to the French and Dutch states and the iconic Armada Portrait to the Royal Museums Greenwich, along with Christie’s role in assisting the sale of Edwin Landseer’s Monarch of the Glen to the National Galleries of Scotland, were more highlights in a year that confirmed Christie’s position as market leaders for Old Masters.”
