MEDIA ALERT: Christie's Chinese Sales in London, May 2017, Total £21,756,750

A Rare & Important Pair of Qianlong Vases Lead The Sales

London – Christie’s Chinese auctions in London on 9 to 12 May achieved a combined total of £21,756,750 (HK$217,985,105 / US$28,139,435 / €25,757,692).

The top lot of the week was a magnificent pair of famille rose 'butterfly' double-gourd vases, which sold for £14,725,000 (HK$147,588,675) at Christie’s King Street saleroom on 9 May. This is the very first time that a pair of these Qianlong vases has been offered; only four other single vases of this type have been sold at auction to date. This important pair of 18th century vases were made for the court of the Qianlong Emperor and his reign mark is painted on the bases. A highlight of the South Kensington sale was a pair of exceptional and rare porcelain seals signed by the famous Republican porcelain painter He Xuren (1882-1940). The seals realised a price of £221,000 (HK$2,207,127) against an estimate of £30,000-50,000.

The next auctions in Christie’s Chinese Art calendar are the online sales Exquisite Eye: Chinese Paintings Online and Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art Online, both opening for bidding on 22 May 2017 at christies.com/onlineonly. Christie’s Hong Kong spring sales season begins on 26 May 2017.
