Featuring over 350 lots, the sale promises to provide bidding opportunities for collectors at every level, with estimates for individual lots ranging from £200 up to £25,000. This fascinating sale resonates with the personalities of these renowned individuals who have exerted a powerful influence on the design and contemporary art worlds respectively - the outcome is an exciting and diverse auction which incorporates Biedermeier furniture and Asian accents of black and gold synonymous with Anouska Hempel Design Ltd; stunning contemporary furniture and pictures including works by Marcel Kammerer and Howard Hodgkin collected by Kay Saatchi during her London years; and Moroccan furniture and works of art – the result of a collaboration between Braka and Tino Zervudachi, Director at Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi. Every item included in the sale will be on public exhibition from 11 to 16 January 2012 at Christie’s, 85 Old Brompton Road prior to the auction; the sale as a whole is expected to fetch in the region of £400,000.

The Collectors

Anouska Hempel (Lady Weinberg) is one of the world’s most celebrated designers. Her London-based design and architectural practice, Anouska Hempel Design (AHD) has an unrivalled international reputation for architecture, interiors, landscapes, graphics and haute-couture. She has designed critically acclaimed luxury hotels, restaurants, private residences, yachts and luxury retail stores throughout the world. Her collaborations include brands such as Moncler, Louis Vuitton, Henry Cotton’s and Van Cleef & Arpels and she continues to be taken afar with her current projects. Throughout the years, she has travelled the world sourcing beautiful and unique pieces. Anouska Hempel’s current portfolio of projects include the Baccarat hotel in Rabat, Tunisia, the new Louis Vuitton store in Paris and the restoration of the French 1930’s Grand Theatre in Beirut. Today, the organization continues to thrive and this sale represents an opportunity for the re-organization of Anouska Hempel’s warehouse.

Kay Saatchi opens a new chapter living and working in LA and is selling the part of her collection which forms a document of the years she spent in London. Kay Saatchi first arrived in London in 1986 at the recommendation of her friend and mentor, the formidable New York art dealer Leo Castelli. Kay Saatchi began her career working at the pioneering Waddington Galleries, before embarking upon an adventure on the British Art scene in the 1990s. Art continues to define Kay Saatchi’s life: she remains involved with projects in London including Anticipation, a showcase for the very best of young graduates leaving art school in the capital. In bringing works from her private London Collection to auction, Kay Saatchi hopes to share with others the great pleasure that these objects have brought to her over the years.

Ivor Braka offers property from a traditional fisherman’s house in St. Tropez – the interior of which he designed together with Tino Zervudachi from Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi. The furniture reflected the Saracenic history of the area and the sale includes a wonderful array of Morrocan and Syrian inlaid furniture and works of art. The collection also contains some impressive pieces of English furniture – having recently purchased The Gunton Arms in Norfolk, his local pub, he and his wife Sarah have been working with Robert Young Antiques and Robert Kime to source and collect furniture and works of art that would give the Gunton Arms a traditional, old English feel with the comfort of a Country House. Inevitably they purchased 30% more than they needed to complete the project, so some of these items now find themselves in the care of Christie's.
