Born in Leiden, the Netherlands in 1613, Dou first trained with his father, who was a glass engraver. Around 1628, he entered Rembrandt van Rijn‘s studio as one of the master’s earliest pupils. Although Rembrandt’s dramatic chiaroscuro and naturalism shaped Dou’s early development, he soon established a highly distinctive style characterised by meticulous craftsmanship and an exceptionally refined finish. The artist even made his own brushes, favouring extremely small tools to create almost imperceptible brushwork.
Dou became known for his intimate cabinet paintings depicting scholars, physicians and merchants, alongside his self-portraits and trompe-l'oeil compositions. Works such as A Poulterer's Shop (c.1670) and The Grocer’s Shop (1672) use painted stone windows and openings to create the illusion of looking into a private world — a style often known as ‘niche’ painting. Rich in symbolism and subtle narrative, these carefully composed interiors celebrate knowledge, domestic virtue and the beauty of the everyday. Music was another recurring theme in Dou’s oeuvre, with The Flute Player (c.1632–1635) being sold by Christie’s for £3.8 million in 2025.
During his lifetime, the artist enjoyed an international reputation. His paintings commanded some of the highest prices of any Dutch artist, attracting distinguished patrons including Pieter Spiering, who paid an annual retainer for first choice of the artist’s works. Dou's painstaking technique influenced a generation of Leiden fijnschilders, including Frans van Mieris the Elder and Gabriel Metsu.
The artist died in 1675. His works remain some of the most sought-after paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, held in major collections including the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Louvre in Paris.
