New York, 17-21 March 2015

Few individuals have made such an invaluable contribution to the study and appreciation of Asian art in the West than the collector, dealer, and scholar Robert Hatfield Ellsworth. Embracing ancient bronzes and Ming furniture, fine jade, modern Chinese painting, and Himalayan, Indian, and Southeast Asian works of art, Ellsworth was fully immersed in every facet of the Asian art historical canon, in addition to being a skilled and passionate collector of English furniture, silver and decorative arts.

Ellsworth’s prolific contributions mark him as one of the last true connoisseur-dealers, and his brilliance, passion and expertise is embodied in his personal collection, one of the greatest assemblages of Asian art in the history of collecting.

Friends, Colleagues and Clients Share Their Memories of Ellsworth

“This is the best business in the world for me,” Robert Ellsworth once remarked. “You never get bored, you never have to retire…. Life is always interesting.” Widely regarded as an icon of scholarship, personal magnetism and cultural philanthropy, he was lauded as the “King of Ming,” an “American Mandarin,” and a “phenomenon and a mystery.”

But to those who knew him best, he was a great deal more. Below, his friends, colleagues, clients and associates share their memories of a man who was singularly dedicated to the rare and extraordinary.

A fabulous 22-room apartment on Fifth Avenue was where Robert Ellsworth practiced a sophisticated brand of understated dealing of Asian art. Meredith Etherington-Smith recalls ‘no ordinary dealer’, one she visited in the early 1980s
