CHRISTIE’S LONDON EVENING AUCTION OF POST-WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART
TOTALS £99.4 MILLION /$169.8 MILLION /€124 MILLION

WORKS BY PETER DOIG, TRACEY EMIN AND JEAN DUBUFFET AMONG SEVEN WORLD RECORDS

Led by Francis Bacon’s Study for Head of Lucian Freud from the Estate of Roald Dahl at £11,506,500, this week’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction achieved £99,413,500 and seven world record prices for artists across generations. Attracting 190 bidders from 28 countries, this was the third highest Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction in Europe ever. Peter Doig’s Gasthof, a key transitional piece in the artist’s oeuvre, nearly doubled its high estimate to £9,938,500.

An iconic work exploring the relationship between Tracey Emin’s life and art, My Bed sold for £2,546,500, a world auction record that builds on Christie’s strong track record with Sensation generation artists. Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Amanti achieved a record price of £2,322,500, following on the success of Eyes Wide Open: An Italian Vision, a groundbreaking sale of an important private collection of post-war Italian art held in February, where the previous record for the artist was set. Lucio Fontana’s lyrical white Concetto spaziale, Attese, with 10 cuts and a handmade frame by the artist, sold above its high estimate at £6,018,500, a sign of continuing demand for high quality Post-War Italian art. Further world records for Jean Dubuffet, Antoni Tàpies, Albert Oehlen and Hurvin Anderson – a student of Doig – underscore the growing strength and breadth of global demand for top works by artists from the 1960s to today.
