Christie’s breakthrough sale of Important American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture in May 2007 propelled us to the top of the field. The sale, totaling $55.4 million, was a remarkable 86% sold. Six months later, our November 2007 sale realized even more staggering results and secured Christie's dominance of the market -- 166 lots sold for a total of $71 million dollars, with 17 lots fetching more than $1 million. Christie's 2007 sales in both New York and Los Angeles in this category totaled $141 million.
Sale highlights of Western art included two works by Frederic Remington -- The Signal (If Skulls Could Speak), which sold for $4.41 million; and a bronze 'The Cheyenne', which fetched $3.18 million.
Highlights of American 20th century art included Andrew Wyeth's Ericksons, 1973, which sold for $10,344,000, setting a world auction record for the artist; and Mary Cassatt's Children Playing With a Dog, 1907, which realized $6,200,000 and set a world auction record for the artist.
