American Art

The American Art Department offers the finest in American paintings, sculptures and works on paper from the colonial period to today. Artists included are from the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, Ashcan School, Western Art, American Modernism and Illustration Art. Christie's hosts major sales of American Art in New York twice a year as well as works from our lower-valued Fine American Art sale in the spring and fall.

In 2008, Christie’s American Art Department had a successful year despite worldwide upheaval in the financial markets; our $108.1 million in sales stands as the second highest total for the firm in this category. In May, Christie’s sold Thomas Moran’s Green River of Wyoming for $17.7 million, setting a new world auction record for a Nineteenth Century American Painting and an entirely new price level for the genre. Moran’s monumental landscape doubled the previous record for a Nineteenth Century work — $8.8 million — which had been held since 2004 by John Singer Sargent’s Robert Louis Stevenson and His Wife.
