From the Edwardians and the beginning of British Modernism to the present day, 20th Century British Art is a collecting area with universal appeal. Christie’s holds two specialist sales of this category annually at King Street and four at our South Kensington saleroom.
Christie’s has led the market in this increasingly popular collecting field for over fifteen years and the category continues to attract new buyers as well as appealing to established collectors. During 2010 we realized exceptional prices for a number of key artists, including new auction records for John Duncan Fergusson, Gluck (Hannah Gluckstein), Ivor Roberts-Jones, R.A, Sir Peter Blake, R.A., and Geoffrey Clarke, R.A. 2011 has seen Christie’s achieve world record prices for Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Laurence Stephen Lowry, Samuel John Peploe and Stanley Spencer. The 20th Century British Art sale at Christie’s in May 2011 was the highest value sale ever mixed owner sale recorded in this category, totaling over £17.9 million.
As the world auction leaders in selling works by Laurence Stephen Lowry, Christie’s has sold over 150 works by the artist in the last five years and holds 7 out of the top 10 prices for the artist at auction. Most recently, Christie’s achieved the world auction record for a painting by Lowry with The Football Match, which sold for £5,641,250 in May 2011. This is the highest price achieved at auction by any work in this 20th Century British Art category. Christie’s also holds the world auction record for a work on paper by the artist with St. Michael and All Angels, Angel Meadow, Manchester which sold for £115,250 in November 2010.
Further, Christie’s has held market share for 20th Century British sculpture, and since 2006 has sold 246 pieces of 20th Century British sculpture totaling £11.5 million. Past highlights have included Dame Barbara Hepworth’s Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red, which achieved the highest price at auction for a carving by the artist; and the world auction record for Dame Elisabeth Frink's Walking Madonna.
