
The Chinese Classical & Modern Paintings Department offers paintings and calligraphy by important ink and brush artists. Christie's hosts Fine Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sales twice a year at our Hong Kong saleroom, featuring both Classical and Modern paintings.
The Classical section consists mainly of works by artists active before the late Qing Dynasty (19th century). The Modern portion offers a fine spectrum of works that dates from late 19th century and 20th century onwards. Artists included in this category are Fu Baoshi, Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, and all those who made a significant contribution to the different schools of the Chinese modern art history.
Emperor Qianlong's Review of the Grand Parade of Troops by Jin Kun, Liang Shizheng and other 18th century court painters realized a dazzling HK$26,383,750 (US$3.4 million) in the spring 2004 sale.
All the Mountains Blanketed in Red by Li Keran (1907-1989) achieved HK$35,040,000 (US$4.5 million) at the spring 2007 sale, setting a world auction record for the artist. At the autumn 2007 sale, works of exceptional quality and rarity attracted spirited bidding. Among them, Paintings and Calligraphy by Dong Qichang (1555-1636), realized HK$48,487,500 (US$6.3 million), a world auction record for this acclaimed Ming dynasty artist.In the same season, the works by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) became a centre of attention, among his important works, Landscape in Splashed Colour achieved a high price of HK$9,959,500 (US$1.3 million).
