Clocks, Marine Chronometers & Barometers

Christie's is the world's premier auction house for antique clocks. In 2008 the world record for any horological auction was set in Christie's Hong Kong with Magnificent Clocks for the Imperial Chinese Market from the Nezu Museum. The fifteen lot sale totaled an astonishing HK$281 million (US$36 million/£18 million), at the same time establishing world auction records for both English and Chinese clocks. In 2007 the record for a Dutch clock was established in Christie's Amsterdam with the sale of a rare early pendulum clock by Salomon Coster. That same year at Christie's in London a Fabergé egg clock sold for just under £9 million (US$18 million), the highest price ever achieved for any clock.

Christie's Clock department is based in London but clocks are sold in auctions around the world and throughout the year, generally in furniture and decorative arts sales. From highly decorative works of art to precision timekeepers, the variety is huge. And although we sometimes sell clocks worth hundreds of thousands - even millions - of pounds, estimates can start as low as £500 in our South Kensington salerooms.
