Impressionist & Modern Art

The Impressionist & Modern Art Department offers paintings, sculptures and works on paper by the foremost artists of the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Artists included are Cézanne, Giacometti, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and all those who forged artistic movements such as Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism.

Christie's hosts major sales of Impressionist & Modern Art in New York and London. Twice a year, both salerooms feature an Evening Sale, a Day Sale, and a specialized sale of Works on Paper. Separate curated sales in our stronghold areas of Italian Art and Art of the Surreal are also held in London. Sales of Impressionist & Modern Art are also held throughout the year in Paris and Amsterdam.

In 2008, global sales for Impressionist & Modern Art at Christie's were in excess of $11.15 billion. Christie’s London Evening Sale in June alone realized £121,127,200 ($239,952,983), a record total for any auction ever held in the United Kingdom, with competitive bids resulting in world record prices for Claude Monet, Henri Moore and Natalia Goncharova amongst others. In our 2009 sales to date, Christie's has secured a robust 86% share of the global Impressionist & Modern Art market, as a result of our successful February sales in London and the Collection Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in Paris, which realized the highest total for a European auction in history.
