On 11 December 2008, Christie’s sold the historic Wittelsbach diamond for $24.3 million, in the midst of great financial turmoil worldwide. This 17th Century blue gem of 35.56cts was exceptional for its rarity, size, color and Royal provenance. It achieved the highest price ever for any diamond at auction, far surpassing the previous record of $16.5 million for a 100 carat diamond set in 1995. This result confirmed that unique gems and jewels will fetch solid prices, even in difficult circumstances.

Christie's has been synonymous with the auction of the most prestigious jewelry, ever since the sale of Madame du Barry’s jewels in 1795. Over the last 200 years, sales have expanded from a small group of connoisseurs into major events attended by dealers and private collectors from around the world, bidding in the room, via the telephone or through the internet.
