Christie's leads the international market in maritime pictures and maritime collectibles. Since its first sale in these categories 20 years ago, Christie’s has set numerous world auction records including $508,800 (£275,027) for Montague Dawson's The Wings of Dawn (July 2006, New York), still undefeated today; and £172,000 for John Wilson Carmichael's A sleek-hulled British Opium Schooner amongst other shipping, including fine-lined Chinese deep water junks and a large British man-o'-war under sail, off what is presumed to be Hong Kong (November 1997, London).
Christie’s Maritime sales feature oil paintings, watercolors, prints, ship's fittings, carvings, figureheads, instruments, models and ephemera, and are the only auction house to hold sales in both London and New York.
Please email us at maritimepaintings@christies.com, if you wish to discuss inclusion of your property in one of our upcoming sales or if you are interested in a complimentary market valuation.
Recent prices in London in 2007 have been exceptional, with 10 new world records for paintings and models in our October 31st sale in King Street.
In New York, the highly successful and record prices realized for J.E. Buttersworth and Montague Dawson in 2007 have confirmed that Christie’s is by far the best place to sell marine art in the US.
