Etienne Hellman joined Christie’s King Street in 1999 and then moved to Paris as a specialist in 19th Century European paintings. During his tenure, he has successfully brought to auction, both in New York and in London, paintings by important artists ranging from Gustave Moreau to Jean Béraud. As Department Head, Etienne has initiated sales of 19th Century and Orientalist paintings in Christie’s new salerooms in Paris where he achieved record prices for paintings by Etienne Dinet and Jacques Majorelle. As international Director of Orientalist art he moved this collecting field further forward, in collaboration with Christie’s Dubai, by being the first to introduce modern Arab and Iranian art auctions in Paris creating a yearly event called the “Visions d’Orient” Sale. Etienne has a M.A. in the History of Art at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, where he is also a PhD candidate. Etienne speaks fluent French, English and Spanish.
