Russian Works of Art & Fabergé

The Russian category continues to be one of the fastest growing and most exciting areas of the international art market. 2007 marked yet another record-breaking year for Russian Art at Christie's, with our November sales realizing an astonishing £39,121,775 / $80,590,857.

Christie’s Russian Works of Art category features extraordinary decorative works of art, including rare pieces of Fabergé, silver, Imperial and Soviet porcelain, militaria, and bronzes. Only the highest quality pieces, dating as far back as the early 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, are selected for auction.

Christie’s has a long and successful history of selling works by Fabergé. In November 2007 an exquisite Fabergé egg from the Rothschild family collection sold for £8.9 million ($18.5 million) in our Russian Art Sale in London. This sale established world auction records for a Russian work of art, a Fabergé item, and a timepiece. Christie’s also achieved the second highest price for a Russian work of art sold at auction and the second highest auction record for Fabergé with the sale of the Imperial Winter Egg, sold for $9,580,000 in April 2002. Christie’s remains the market leader in Fabergé sales both in London and globally, representing 71% of Fabergé sales in London and 79% of Fabergé sales worldwide in 2007.

We hold combined sales featuring Pictures and Works of Art in New York in April and at our King Street salerooms in London in June. One of the highlights of the London auction calendar, The Russian Sale Week in November will include an evening sale of exceptional paintings, a new sale showcasing the finest Post-War and Contemporary art and a dedicated Russian Art sale hosted at our South Kensington salerooms. Russian icons, miniatures and books are sold in specialized sales at Christie's King Street, South Kensington, and New York.
