Spanish Art

Christie's inaugural sale of Spanish Art in Madrid (October 2004) demonstrated a keen interest in Spanish art and confirmed our strong belief in a market worth expanding. Spanish Art is now a recurring sale on Christie's auction calendar, occurring in Madrid each October. Collectors of Spanish art are discerning buyers drawn to our sales' fair estimates for works fresh to the market.

Our October 2005 and 2006 sales were highly successful, as prices realized soared far above their pre-sale estimates. The 2006 sale achieved a total of over €15 million ($19 million), setting a world record for an auction of Spanish art. Highlights from this sale included Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa's El Casino de Paris, which achieved €2.9 million ($3.7 million), setting a world auction record for the artist.

The 2007 Spanish Art sale achieved over €14 million sustaining our lead in the Spanish Art market. Furthermore the Spanish government purchasing two important lots: the sale's top lot, Dejeuner sur l'herbe II, by Miquel Barceló, and a magnificent work by Antonio Saura, Noa from 1959. This sale further established significant records for Spanish artists, including Francesco Bayeu y Subias, Pablo Palazuelo and Ángel Ferrant. This successful auction was also supported for the first time by online bidding through Christie's LIVE.

The Spanish team looks forward to the next sale in 2008 which will take place 2 October. We are already accepting consignments for this category. Please contact one of the specialists listed below if you would like to discuss, without obligation, a market appraisal of your work.
